interview with foster carers

Anne and her husband Tom had given a lot of thought about fostering before deciding it was the right time to do someting about it.

They had researched fostering on the internet and read lots of information before deciding to take the plunge and to contact a fostering agency.

When they became approved foster carers, it took time to adjust to their new lifestyle and as the full-time foster carer, Anne was no longer going out to work and instead, was staying home caring for a young person.

Anne said; ‘I always put myself in the shoes of the young person, I try to think

about how they must feel and aim to put them at ease and make them feel

  welcome'.

Anne and Tom have been fostering since 2007, Anne enjoys her role as a

foster carer and now sees it as a profession.

She said; ‘It is a challenging and hugely rewarding job working with young

people who have gone through difficulties in their life.’ Anne and Tom are

devoted to helping children reach their full potential and Anne said; 'I totally

  recommend a career in fostering'.

Tom said; ‘It’s a continual learning curve – not only do you learn about the best techniques and approaches for caring for your particular young person, you learn a lot about yourself , what pushes your buttons and your coping mechanisms.
